The influence of corpulence on the mechanical properties of the human heel fat pad in elderly

چکیده
Background The human heel fat pad (HFP) is an effective shock absorber [1]. A remodelling of body fat begins from the fifth decade of the human life. Diet may negatively influence this distribution and consequently lead to corpulence in elderly persons. Alcantara and colleges reported that fat content in the HFP increases with obesity [2]. Hence, the purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect of corpulence on the mechanical properties of the HFP in elderly. We hypothesized, that corpulence alters mechanical properties of the HFP compared to normal weighted elderly persons.

The heel fat pad: mechanical properties and clinical applications
The human heel pad is a highly specialised fibroadipose tissue that is hierarchically structured to dissipate the stress associated with weight–bearing activities. While the properties of the heel pad, as a whole, are believed to reflect those of the collagen– and elastin–rich septa which envelope adipocytes and confine their movement, the scientific literature provides little consensus on the ...
متن کاملThe influence of foot posture, support stiffness, heel pad loading and tissue mechanical properties on biomechanical factors associated with a risk of heel ulceration.
Heel ulcers (HU) are the second most common type of pressure ulcers. In this work, we developed the first anatomically-realistic three-dimensional finite element model of the posterior heel for studying the risk for HU in bedridden patients. We specifically simulated a heel that is resting on supports with different stiffnesses at upright and inclined foot postures. Our objective was to examine...

The purpose of this study was to compare the heel pad mechanical properties of runners, who repetitively load the heel pad during training, with cyclists who do not load their heel pads during training. Ten competitive long distance runners and 10 competitive cyclists volunteered for this study. The thickness of the unloaded heel pad was measured using realtime B-mode ultrasonography. A heel pa...

Objective Plantar fasciitis is a plantar fascia inflammation and one of the most common causes of heel pain, causing pain in the inner side of the heel bone. The purpose of this investigation was to analyze the effect of different foot orthoses on the distribution of foot pressure in patients with plantar fasciitis. Materials & Methods The systematic search of PubMed, Science Direct and Web of...
متن کاملMaterial properties of the heel fat pad across strain rates
The complex structural and material behaviour of the human heel fat pad determines the transmission of plantar loading to the lower limb across a wide range of loading scenarios; from locomotion to injurious incidents. The aim of this study was to quantify the hyper-viscoelastic material properties of the human heel fat pad across strains and strain rates. An inverse finite element (FE) optimis...
